Super Burrito Costume

It's Halloween time, and this year, I'm super excited about my costume! I live pretty close to San Francisco's Mission neighborhood, where a super burrito is an institution. What makes it "Super" you wonder? Well, besides the amazing taste, a burrito is not "super" unless it has guacamole and sour creme scooped into it. If you've never had one, I highly recommend the Super Burrito with Carnitas.

The backbone of the whole getup is the cardboard tortilla. I knew I had to roll it, so the direction of the corrugation became very important. I measured out the right amount to wrap the whole thing around myself and used the left over pieces to make the costume even longer at the bottom.

It's surprisingly difficult to get that yellowish beige color, and even more difficult to paint on burn/grill marks. I'm afraid it looks a little like a giraffe... I'm only painting the top portion since the bottom will be wrapped in foil. It's important to get a good crinkly foil wrap on your burrito. Not wanting to waste actual foil, I found a silver wrapping paper instead, crumpled it up, and glued it on. I also cut the bottom like that to allow a bit more movement. With a strait tube all the way down, I could barely walk!

A bunch of my filling supplies came from a thrift store. I was especially excited to find a giant leaf place mat set on the cheap. I also ended up buying that mushroom pencil sharpener, but that was just because I wanted it. I was really struggling with how to do the beans, but ultimately, stuffing black hose with cotton fluff and tying a knot looked the most bean shaped.

Burrito Costume 14 Sour CreamI wasn't sure how to do the sour cream for a while, but I finally came up with a solution I thought would be perfect: A white trash bag would have the right color and shimmery texture to look like a dollop. The problem was that I couldn't attach it with the hot glue gun without melting the bag. Hmm... The solution was to sort of strap the bag in place with a loop of cardboard. Works like a charm.

The final touch was adding a guacamole colored cape, to act as both padding at the shoulder holes and because, well it is a SUPER Burrito, right?

And now the moment you probably scrolled to the bottom to spoil...

SUPER BURRITO!!
