Bike-Rack-Coffee-Table Concept Renderings

For the past week or so I’ve been a little freelance work with a local artist. She was putting together a proposal to re-purpose underutilized bike racks, and asked if I could produce imagery to help explain her idea. She also planned to hire someone to fabricate a prototype. The concept was to turn urban infrastructure into markers of place. She proposed to adapt 5 racks (temporarily) throughout the city with both a small tabletop and a solar powered light to project a pattern towards the ground at night. Each would mark the place with table tops and patterns of light below that matched the characteristics of local architecture.

I'm a very visual person, so it was difficult for me to wrap my head around the concept without existing imagery. Even (or especially) when the idea is simple, there are MANY details the often reveal themselves in execution. To work these details out, I sketched out my interpretations of her idea, and send it to her for clarification. After this back-and-forth, I sketched a "final" exploded diagram of the bike rack to explain the concept to the fabricator.

To accommodate her budget, I made the renderings quick and dirty in photoshop using images she'd sent over. I think the goal was to show the 5 different "flavors" of the concept. I also threw together a quick night-and-day scene to show the rack in context. Not my best Photoshop job, but the concept was clear and the client was happy.
